Step-by-Step Guide: How to Change a Bed with a Waterproof Protector from Adaptive Equipment - Perfect for carers, family members or support workers assisting older adults or people with limited mobility.

How to Change a Bed with a Waterproof Protector

Before you begin

Gather everything you’ll need:

  • Clean waterproof fitted sheet or mattress protector
  • Clean top sheet and pillowcases
  • Absorbent bed pad (if used)
  • Clean waterproof quilt or blanket
  • Gloves (if needed for hygiene)
  • Laundry bag for soiled bedding
  • If the person is in the bed, explain what you’re going to do - this helps maintain comfort and dignity.

Step 1: Prepare the workspace

  • Wash or sanitise your hands.
  • Lower the bed to a safe working height and lock the wheels.
  • Remove any items from the bed (pillows, blankets, personal items).
  • Loosen the corners of the soiled bedding.

Step 2: Assist the person to one side

  • Ask the person to roll gently onto their side (or assist them if needed, following safe manual handling techniques).
  • If two carers are present, one supports the person while the other changes the linen.
  • If alone, work in halves - change one side first, then the other.

Step 3: Roll and remove soiled bedding

  • Roll the soiled sheet and protector inwards toward the person’s back, tucking it snugly so it doesn’t cause discomfort.
  • If using a bed pad, fold and remove it as well.
  • Place soiled items directly into the laundry bag.

Step 4: Fit clean waterproof protector and sheet

  • Take the clean waterproof fitted sheet or protector and roll it lengthwise.
  • Position it on the exposed mattress half and unroll it up to the person’s back.
  • Smooth it out and tuck in the corners securely.
  • If using a separate bed pad, lay it flat on top of the sheet in the correct position (usually under hips or buttocks).

Step 5: Reposition and complete the other side

  • Gently help the person roll onto the clean side.
  • Remove the remaining soiled linen and pull the clean protector and sheet through.
  • Finish tucking and smoothing the sheet so the surface is wrinkle-free.

Step 6: Replace top bedding

  • Add the clean top sheet, waterproof quilt or blanket and replace pillowcases.
  • Ensure the person is comfortable, warm, and correctly positioned.
  • Adjust the bed height back to a safe level.

Step 7: Clean up

  • Place used linens in the laundry area for washing.
  • Wipe down any surfaces if needed.
  • Wash or sanitise your hands again.

Quick Tips

  • Always keep at least one spare waterproof sheet or pad ready for emergencies.
  • Smooth surfaces prevent skin irritation and pressure areas.
  • Use breathable protectors for comfort and temperature control.
  • Keep communication calm, respectful and reassuring throughout the process.
